The ORGANIZATION OF HOME CARE PROFESSIONALS was formed by rehab employees of Inova VNA Home Health on August 23, 2000. The purpose of the organization is to advance and promote the general welfare of its members through collective bargaining, grievance representation, contract administration and other available avenues. It is also the purpose of this organization to promote the high standards of the health care profession. A large majority of the Rehab staff at Inova VNA Home Health have joined the OHCP.
In August 2000, a majority of dedicated Inova VNA physical therapists, occupational therapists and speech and language pathologists elected to unite to form a collective bargaining unit called the Organization of Home Care Professionals, or OHCP. Then, in a secret ballot sponsored by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) on October 25, 2000, the therapists voted by a landslide majority of 83 to 16 to have the OHCP as their collective bargaining representative. As a result of this election, the OHCP was certified by the United States government as the only legal collective bargaining representative of physical, occupational and speech therapists employed by Inova VNA Home Health.
The OHCP is the first therapist only union in the United States and it is the first Union ever successfully organized within the Inova Health System. The purpose of OHCP is to represent and promote the interests of therapists in negotiations with Inova VNA management, and to promote the high standards of the rehabilitation health care professions.
In September 2001 the members of the Organization of Home Care Professionals ( OHCP) voted to affiliate with the Communications Workers America and joined with CWA Local 2252.
The Inova Health System is vehemently anti union and initially attempted to break the Union but due to the commitment and solidarity of its members OHCP-CWA has successfully negotiated three contracts with the Inova Health System. The third contract expires on December 31, 2010.
OHCP values an open dialogue with management to address issues that are important to all home health care therapists. These include:
But the OHCP is not just a collective bargaining unit, it is also a professional organization and is working to bring therapists together to continuously improve clinical performance, knowledge and communication . One of the goals of the OHCP is to demonstrate excellence as home health care professionals.
